Bipolar depression, once known as manic depression affects thousands of people around the world. It is perhaps the most severe type of depression a person can face often times requiring years of treatment to be effectively kept under control. This disorder is characterized by extreme highs and lows in a person’s moods. These emotional roller coaster rides are often unpredictable and can have severe consequences. If you have been diagnosed as suffering from bipolar depression there is a long road of recovery ahead but do not feel discouraged. With the proper treatment and right mental attitude you have a very good chance at living a seemingly normal life.

Many times the first step in treating bipolar depression or manic depression is to seek professional help. A doctor or counselor will need to evaluate your specific depression. Once an accurate evaluation is completed (this can take several sessions) a treatment plan can be implemented. They may schedule you for continuing therapy so they can closely monitor your depression. These therapy sessions may be broken down into four types of treatment. These four types of therapy include individual counseling, group counseling, family counseling, and marriage counseling.

Individual counseling is just what its name suggests meaning you meet with a counselor in an one on one environment with the goal of learning ways to cope with your depression. You may also discuss topics regarding your recent feelings or moods. This type of treatment focuses on helping you to recover from depression.

The second traditional type of therapy is group counseling in which a group of individuals suffering for depression meet and discuss their personal struggles with depression as well as their successes. This type of therapy helps in understanding you are not along when fight depression. Many other people also suffer from depression. You will also gain valuable insights into other people who are going through the same problems you may be facing. You will often feel more at ease discussing problems you are going through with these people because you know they can truly understand where you are coming from.

The third type of therapy is family counseling. Family counseling consists of visits with a counselor by you and your loved ones. The sessions center on several points. One of these focal points is helping your family understand ways of coping with your depression. You may also discuss ways for your family to assist in helping you feel better and some of the causes for your depression.

The last type of depression therapy is known as marriage counseling but do not be confused, you do not have to be struggling in your marriage to participate in this type of therapy. Depression is difficult for doctors to understand much less your loving spouse. He or she may blame themselves for your condition so it is important they attend therapy with you so that they may learn your depression is not their fault. During your therapy you both will learn ways of better coping with depression but your spouse will also learn ways he or she can help in your recovery. A strong moral support system at home is one of the best treatments for any type of depression.

In addition to regular therapy bipolar depression will often times require some type of prescription antidepressants but only your doctor will know for sure. Antidepressants themselves come with their own evils including common side effects such as personality changes and weight gain. If your doctor does decide to prescribe prescription antidepressants to aid in your treatment of bipolar depression you will want to closely monitor how you feel each day. The wrong antidepressant can lead to adverse effects even causing a reverse reaction in some cases worsening your depression past the point of no return. Some people suffering from bipolar depression have actually taken their own life as a result of taking the wrong type of antidepressant. These cases are rare and typically result when a person is suffering from undiagnosed bipolar depression. Depression is like any other illness, it will not be cured overnight. It will take time and determination on your part to get through depression and even though there will be times when you feel like giving up, do not!
