Depression and Self Help
Perhaps one of the most painful experiences a person can go through, depression steals the enjoyment out of peoples’ lives every day. Although we have found ways of treating depression there is still much we do not understand about this illness. Currently it is estimated that anywhere between three to twenty percent of adults suffer from depression. It is hard to say how many people are suffering from depression at this very moment but have been undiagnosed. Although it seems as though all hope is lost those suffering from less severe depression often can find amazing results through self help guides. Depression and self help guides seem an unlikely pair but there are entire programs dedicated to teaching those suffering from depression how to cope and lead seemingly normal lives. Depending on which depression and self help program you were to join there are different points of focus but one I find intriguing is the idea of surrounding yourself with positive people. I once read an interview where Adam Sandler had supposedly stated he only includes generally happy people in his life because he refuses to be in the presence of negativity. I found that very interesting. Negativity is actually just like a parasite and it can spread rapidly.
Once upon a time I worked in sales and one thing every manager had to deal with was negativity. When in a sales environment where paychecks can fluctuate from one month to the next it is easy to get down. One thing that was not tolerated however was spreading your grief through the office. If you look for a reason to fail you are always going to find one. Anyone who makes a living in sales knows the negative salesman starves. Your attitude will spread right to your customers and a negative customer isn’t buying. By surrounding yourself with positive people you can feed off their positive energy thus relieving your own depression symptoms.
Another major point when tackling depression and self help is a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. There has long been a link shown between self esteem and depression. If you already feel negatively toward yourself depression has no trouble finding a home within you. By eating proper diet and getting plenty of exercise not only will you look better but you will feel better. You’ll walk with your head held high and it will show to those around you not just physically but mentally as well.
You may be surprised at what I am about to tell you but if you are not sleeping at least eight hours a night you are harming your body. You may not feel it right away but over time lack of sleep can take a toll on your body and I’ve even read theories which state cheating yourself by just two hours of sleep a night can shorten your lifespan as much as ten years. In the short term lack of sleep can lead to depression however. Getting the right amount of sleep is just one more easy way of dealing with depression and self help.
Remember when your mother told you it would do you some good to get some sun? She was right. Certain vitamins present in sunlight inhibit depression. By not allowing your body to get sufficient amounts of sunlight you are cheating yourself out of these. This can lead to depression in otherwise healthy people and for those already suffering from depression it can actually cause it to worsen. By now you are probably seeing how depression and self help is very easily achievable but I have one last tidbit for you; stress.
Managing stress is one of the strongest ways to fend off depression. No matter how much money you have or what job you work everyone has stress in their lives. What matters is how much and how you relieve it. If you don’t find an effective way to let off some of this steam it will build inside eventually leading to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety but not only that you could also be writing yourself out a sure fire ticket to a heart attack or stroke. Stress can cause high blood pressure which is a leading cause of both of these. One golden way to manage stress in your life is through yoga which centers around deep breathing techniques designed to relax you.
So you see depression and self help are not all that far apart at all. It is totally reasonable for you to self treat your depression, however if you feel as though your depression is outside of your control or if you begin to feel worse you need to contact your doctor right away. As with any treatment depression and self help may not be right for everyone but for the mass majority of people it is certainly worth taking a look at.
